WiiU @ E3: Why Nintendo Needs to Announce Achievements
Lets make no bones about it, the WiiU is trouble and I think adding achievements to the WiiU will help. This E3 period is critical for Nintendo even though they are not holding a conference. The games they show there will help and arguably make the WiiU look even stronger than the PS4 or new Xbox. For Nintendo the lack of achievements could be a fatal mistake.
In our article, The WiiU the Hype and Dismay we discussed that 3rd parties are a major issue for Nintendo. Now with EA pulling the plug on the WiiU with no Madden this year and not developing the Frostbyte Engine for the Nintendo Console, this issue is getting highlighted even more. An achievement system could go some way to encouraging developers to port their games across.
A lot of the third party titles Nintendo has are games that are available on other systems or ports of older games released on the Xbox 360 or PS3. I was interested in picking one or two of them up for my WiiU, however two things put me off. First, the price and second, there are no achievements or trophies on the WiiU .
That may seem very shallow but getting the big achievement unlocked adds something. I am not an achievement whore who goes out of the way to get achievements but if there is an achievement I can get through a normal run of the game I will try and get it. For a multi-platform game given the choice between a system which has achievements and one which doesn’t you would choose the system with achievements.
Almost all gaming systems now have a form of an achievement system with Nintendo as the notable exception. Even the mobile devices have some form in iOS and Amazon’s Gamecircle with Google announcing something in the coming weeks. Nintendo marches to the beat of different drummer than everyone else and for the most part this works but an achievement system works BETTER as there can only be benefits to adding one.
A simple Nintendo-styled system with coins or stars would work and would encourage more third parties to port their games to the console. There would be people who play those games just to get the achievements and in turn more games overall on the system which would encourage people to BUY the WiiU .
I like my WiiU but not having an achievement system was short sighted for Nintendo. I hope they will incorporate one in the upcoming summer patch. I can’t wait to see the upcoming games the WiiU will show at E3 and in my mind they could WIN E3 just based on the quality of games coming this second half of the year.
